Custom Cabinetry by Echelon Builders: The Importance of having your own Cabinet Shop

Updated: Oct 3

Custom kitchen cabinets

Custom Cabinetry by Echelon Builders is a service we are really proud to offer our clients. We design and build all components in our shop to ensure the highest quality and best building practices. All of our builds are done in our own state of the art cabinet shop located in Attleboro, MA. We offer endless options for cabinet construction and design. We can finish a cabinet in any color and any finish with any species of wood. This can be done in any style; be it modern, classically styled or anything in between. We also spray and finish all our cabinets in house with most finishes being a conversion varnish lacquer to produce a very hard and durable finish. We build furniture grade products and everything we offer is a design build, so we can then change it around through different revisions. This is a great perk for our clients because we have the capability in house to be able to fully execute and design for the client and achieve whatever they can dream up.

To start the process of a build or a remodel we make sure to tour our clients through the shop showroom in Medway, MA. This allows them to see in person all of the options and choices so we can get them what they want. It is important to us for the client to be fully in control of their design. During this time we try to get to know as much as we can about them and their lifestyle. With every project our client relationships are our number one priority, and we need to make sure what we are building works best for them. For us, the most important thing when creating custom cabinetry is understanding the use of the kitchen or space. We take into account how the elements of the kitchen are interacted with and then decide the best way to design and program it. By programming, we mean: where do we put the fridge? Where do we put the microwave? Where do we put the range? How do our clients plan to use their kitchen or their space? Some things we take into account at the beginning of a job and getting to know clients are logistical but important information. For example; are they a small family that doesn't enjoy hosting or are they a family that loves to host every weekend. We need to know these things because that will help us decide on our design plan. The more information that we have about our clients lifestyle and the way that they interact with their home the better.

When you build custom anything you have the freedom to add some really unique features that serve their space and their lifestyle. Some great features we have built to date are: appliance cubbies that are hidden in the wall, custom storage areas in the drawers for K-Cups and Espresso Pods, cutlery dividers, spatula dividers, pots, and pan dividers. Our options are endless.

If  you have seen it somewhere like Etsy, Pinterest or a magazine, we can take that idea and create it for your space.

When you build cabinetry, you can build many different ways. Our cabinets are built with pocket screws, with glue at every seam and joint and we only use three-quarter inch plywood. We do not put half inch plywood in our boxes nor do we use particle board. We only use solid veneer, plywood, furniture grade finish grade.  Our favorite materials to use are solid veneer plywood and Eastern or Baltic birch finish grade maple for our boxes. Our drawers are usually Baltic birch or hard rock Maple and every drawer is a dovetailed unit and is designed to be efficient, to be furniture grade and to not have access seams and Malian points. We want our cabinetry to be as close to furniture grade as possible, so we want to make sure that we are building the strongest, most well thought out boxes and join them in a way that they will stand the test of time.

One of the things we like to do when we build our cabinets is to dress them up on the inside as well as the outside. One of the ways that we dress up the inside is that we install these shelf pins called ferrules. These pins are machined pieces of metal that are nickel finished, brass, black or anything that goes and it has a shelf pin to match. What this allows you to do is create another level of class in your cabinetry and it looks very nice when finished. The Farrell’s are attached or installed with compression fit, and then when we are done spraying everything, we then come in and compress the Farrell into the sides of the boxes.

Another feature we offer is sprayed interiors so you have the matching color from the outside of the cabinet wrapping into the inside. It just creates a very nice classic look and a very timeless look.

It has been very useful for us to invest in the cabinet shop and to have that in house because now we are able to control the quality and control the practice of construction we offer our clients. In house we have everything we need like; a full spray booth, a joining and milling area and we’re able to do any type of finish. By being able to manage all of these departments up to our standards our methods are a lot better and we are able to build to a higher level while giving our clients the freedom to design anything they want without limitations.

Take an inside look at some of the features in our custom cabinets.
