English style pantry remodel

Recently, we took on the remodel of a classic New England colonial in Mansfield, MA. This space was severely affected by a major leak from the second-floor laundry room and needed to be repaired and restored. This project included a full remodel of the kitchen, pantry, laundry, mudroom, powder room, living room and hallways.

The leak in the second floor laundry mainly affected the downstairs living space. At the start of our

design plan our priority was to make sure that this was not a problem that these homeowners would need to deal with again. In the redone laundry we added three steps of leak prevention and detection. We did this by adding a copper pan under the machines, a wireless leak detector that notifies the client when moisture is detected, and a “valve stop” valve actuator that shuts the valves off completely when water is detected preventing further damage. One of our favorite things about a project is working with our clients to design and execute all of their wants and needs with the remodel. This was a small detail we could give them to help provide peace of mind that this would not be a problem again.

We aim for perfection and attention to detail on every job and due to the damage, we needed to do a full demo to the studs and rebuild the areas from scratch. We added new framing members where needed, new soundproofing insulation, and new sheetrock and plaster to all affected areas. During the remodel the family was still living in the house, so we set many extra precautions to make sure that we were keeping the worksite safe for them. Some precautions we put in place were temporary accommodations for basic necessities and extra safety precautions with tarping and air filters. In the home we created a temporary kitchen in the living room and made a temporary laundry solution by bringing the washer to the basement and the dryer to the garage and creating temporary venting for it. For safety, we isolated all the areas we were working in to contain dust and we also implemented air scrubbers with HEPA and charcoal/micron filters to filter and clean the air being recycled into the living spaces to keep fine dust and contaminates down. Having the family still in the home during the remodel gave us some opportunity for creative problem solving, but it was a great way to continue our client collaboration daily during the remodel process.

The main design concept for this remodel was function, sophistication and classic style. Here are some ways we achieved this:

Bathroom

The bathroom features a classically styled Pedestal sink and champagne gold wall sconces with fluted glass and an antique style mirror to bring it all together. The walls are beautifully accented in beadboard with a chair rail. It also features a V groove ceiling, custom milled colonial casing and crown molding, creating a timeless and sophisticated atmosphere.

Mudroom and Pantry

The mudroom and English Style pantry features an old world style floor that blends functionality with elegance. It is a herringbone design in ceramic tile with a broken bond double border and rustic herringbone body infill which ensures style and practicality. With its weathered appearance and easy maintenance this floor exudes timeless charm while meeting modern needs of a well used space. The cabinetry is finished in a Duxbury Grey from Benjamin Moore and is finished in house with conversion varnish. We produced painted finished interiors to continue the classic look and also added our industry leading brass shelf ferrules and pins on the interiors to give it another level of class and touch. We also incorporated Claro Walnut counter-tops and interior shelving throughout the mudroom and pantry cabinets to give you a warm and charming finish inside and out.

Kitchen

Our main goal for the kitchen was to create a warm and welcoming space that is functional and elegant. For this job we decided on beaded inset cabinetry made from Baltic Birch and hard rock maple. This provides a very classic and timeless look that has depth and plenty of charm. Every piece of cabinetry and millwork was meticulously crafted in our in-house shop, ensuring precision and quality. We took great care in perfecting every detail to exceed our clients' expectations. These cabinets also feature built-in under cabinet lighting. The cabinets were sprayed with conversion varnish in Chantilly Lace from Benjamin Moore. The kitchen also features a copper pan under the dishwasher in case of an emergency, a pot filler behind the range and a built-in cabinet microwave. One of our favorite features is a smart hood over the gas range. This hood automatically turns on as it begins venting as soon as the range is on. A really convenient gesture to ensure you never forget to turn your vent on.
